W3C Web Machine Learning Community Group · Agent Web Standard

WebMCP

The proposed web standard that lets a page register its own JavaScript functions as tools for AI agents through document.modelContext.registerTool(), each with a plain-language description and a schema, so agents act through a site's own code and interface instead of scraping it. Chrome opened an origin trial in Chrome 149, Edge has one in Edge 150, and ChatGPT Desktop supports it, with experimental support in Brave's Leo. Spec commits from 13 to 16 October settled concurrency, permission and re-registration rules, and TypeScript types ship as webmcp-types on npm. 4,671 stars. Unrelated to the earlier community WebMCP project archived in week 21 of 2025.
